what should we wear: family photos

Okay, we need help. I need help. We are paying for family photos on the beach in Hawaii and I cannot put together a coherent set of outfits to save my life. Half of our party will be wearing white shirts and dark pants. I haven't heard from the other half, but I think the general idea is to avoid too much color.

What do you think? Please ignore the crazy Saturday hair (too lazy to edit, I like to keep it real) and general disheveled-ness.

Even though the last one is my favorite I'm not sure it really works. B adds a nice splash of color, but J and I look boring. J's shorts are the wrong shade of black. Can I wear stripes with everyone else wearing solids? All of the 12 month shorts I thought B would wear are too big, so he will have to wear last summer's clothes. I'm trying to minimize clothes shopping for this trip, but that hope is quickly fading. I'm not good at stuff like this. I need someone to style us.

  1. I like option 1! I think your shirt looks very beach-y.

  2. I like 3, too. The stripes are smaller and less busy than the dress so I think it will be gone with other solids.

  3. I'm not a stylist or anything, but I would say if you are going with option 3, then you should also have a bit of a dressier shirt or something to add a bit of pizazz.

    B. and J. are both wearing shirts with collars which is somewhat dressy-casual for a guy. If you are going to stick with the striped T-shirt, I would maybe have a white gauzy wrap or some earrings, or even a black skirt to match them. You don't need to go overboard, but adding one element that says "hey this is a little nicer than what I would usually wear" can help punch up the picture. Does that make sense?

  4. I like option 1. The dress looks nice, but probably too busy if everyone else is wearing white or solids.

  5. I like option 1 but would wear a white or darker blue vest under the white shirt. I think you look lovely in your option three but too casual compared to your men! Hope this helps?

  6. Aww, fun! Family photos in Hawaii! I like option 2 if J wears khakis and a blue shirt that matches yours and B's.

  7. In my totally unprofessional opinion, I think any of these combinations could work with a bit of tweaking. I'm with Emily who suggests that your favorite option would be fine if you can dress up your outfit a little bit to match your dressier men. A bright chunky necklace or earrings or gauzy scarf would do the trick (jeweliq.com has great necklaces all for under $25 with free shipping--I'm not affiliated, but I've ordered from them before). Those bright colored chew bead necklaces would also be cute and would punch it up just enough.

Although you said everyone is wearing light tops with dark bottoms, I'm a big fan of khaki over black, especially for a beachy picture. So I'd switch out J's shorts/pants for khakis, but that's just personal preference.

My favorite is the shirt you're wearing in option 1 (it just seems the beachiest to me) but again I'd want you and J to be in white and khaki to look breezy and better match you and B.

The dress is also cute--I like the blues on you and B. Maybe J could wear a light blue button down or polo?

Sorry that's not super helpful... The good news is that if you're in Hawaii, with the sun on your face and the breeze in your hair you'll all look beautiful no matter what you're wearing.

  8. I think option #1, but maybe with a more casual shirt for J. Just so that he matches you a bit better. You mentioned B being a splash of color, and I think if that's what you're going for, definitely option 1. (But honestly, no one looks bad on a beach in Hawaii!)

  9. I like one but put hubby in short, For a casual look. Or option 2 hubby needs to put on blue shirt and khaki pants for a dressier look. You look pretty in yhe beacy white shirt or the drees. I am not a fan of close stripes in photos I think it is distracrin. I do not get that felling form the blue drees. No mater what they will be beautiful! Ps it seems to trend abound her so CAL has changed it used to be very monotone colors in family beach photos. Now photographer wants to captures more of the subjects personality. SO i say wear something that makes you shine who you are!

  10. I love options 1 and 3, with 1 being my favorite. You look great! I agree with the others if you choose option 3, just dress it up a little bit.

  11. I like the first one, but I would have hubby holding B in his right arm with his left arm around you. Ditch the socks (of course) and maybe try rolling the pant legs slightly, since the color of his pants works much better with your pants. I am not a fan of the stripes with the rest of your group look. Love the striped look on you as a separate entity.

  12. I like option 1 or 3 for you (Definitely option 3 for J and B looks adorable in everything.) You look great in 2 but the stripes will be too much for the pictures. And I have to agree with Emily that 3 needs something to dress it up a bit.

I hope the willingness to pose for pictures means J is feeling better.

  13. I'd say #1 but with a different undershirt to match your guys. I'd also suggest J wearing his shorts from the other picture.
